Former WWE Star CM Punk will be making his much awaited UFC debut on September 10 at the UFC 203. The 38-year-old will lock horns with Mickey Gall in a welterweight fight.
Everyone was surprised by UFC’s decision to sign Punk because he has absolutely no prior experience of professional mixed martial arts.
It also seemed at the time, UFC is trying to capitalize Punk’s WWE fame. Now that the fight is less than 10 days away, we will see how successful that decision turns out to be. Even though Punk’s opponent is not a veteran fighter and it will be Gall’s only third professional fight in the UFC. He won both his previous fights rear naked choke submission move in the first round.
The former two time UFC heavyweight champion Overeem, has heavily criticized Punk and believes “He doesn’t know what he’s getting himself into”. However, the 36-year-old understands UFC has brought him into this group as he will be one of the biggest attraction for the fans on September 10.
“The Reem” said: “I totally understand and realize you need to have these ‘show’ fights to kind of boost the sport. Brock (Lesnar) came from the WWE, I think it was great for the sport, he’s a big guy, I enjoyed watching his fights. So the same for CM Punk. He’s getting a lot of attention, but I think it’s not going to be in his favor. His division welterweight, that’s a very hard division.”
The fight will take place at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. It will be the first such event in the city of Cleveland. All eyes will be on CM Punk though, as fans have been waiting for over a year for this fight since he signed for UFC in December 2014.
The card will also be headlined by Alistair Overeem-Stipe Miocic main event, while the co-main event will feature Fabrício Werdum-Travis Browne fight. This is star studded card with some excellent fights from top to botton.
